A “Super Speeder” may sound like a Marvel action hero. But, under Georgia law, a Super Speeder is someone who drives at least 75 miles per hour on a two-lane road or at least 85 mph on roads with more lanes, including highways. The fine for being a Super Speeder is $200 beyond the cost of an underlying speeding ticket.
Finding out that they’re considered a Super Speeder can come as a surprise to drivers, unless the police officer who stops a driver tells them that their excessive speed makes them a Super Speeder. That’s because while they’ll be given a citation at the scene, they’ll get a separate notification by mail from the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) informing them that $200 has been added to the cost of their speeding ticket.
Georgia takes these Super Speeder citations very seriously. If the $200 isn’t paid within 120 days, a driver’s license will be suspended. It costs an additional $50 to get it reinstated.
Drivers who live outside of Georgia aren’t completely spared from the Super Speeder law or penalties. They’re required to pay the same fee on schedule. If they don’t, the DDS notifies the state where their license was issued. It’s up to that state whether to suspend their license accordingly.
What if a driver gets multiple Super Speeder citations?
While the consequences are serious, they could be even worse. The DDS doesn’t add points to someone’s driving record if they get a Super Speeder citation or if they don’t pay the $200 fee. Further, the cost of being a Super Speeder doesn’t increase if there are subsequent citations. However, multiple citations can add up to a lot of money.
More importantly, driving at speeds high enough to get a Super Speeder citation is extremely dangerous. The faster a driver is traveling, the more serious any crash they’re involved in is likely to be for all parties involved.
Since a driver doesn’t receive a Super Speeder citation until after a traffic stop is over, it can be harder than usual to challenge it if it was wrongfully issued. However, with experienced legal guidance, it is a citation that can be worth fighting.
